MAKEROOMTOGETHER

A studio, not an office

Makers Collective is a shared workspace for people who design, build, film, code, illustrate and prototype. Not a hot-desk farm — a studio with tools, light and room to spread out, where leaving a half-finished thing on your bench overnight is the normal state of affairs.

A studio, not an office
A wall of hand tools above a workbench
A print room with presses and equipment
An airy workspace with plants and tall windows
A communal kitchen with a long shared table
A warm bench under lamps beside shelves of books
Rooftop terrace seating with a city view
Timber work benches beside a tall window
An open-plan studio with a counter and plants

Who makes here

Twelve resident makers. Here are four of them, described by what they make rather than by what they are called.

Pottery tools and a wheel photographed from above

Ceramic studio

Hand-thrown tableware in small-batch production. The kiln runs twice a week and anybody in the building can put a piece in it, which is how three people who are not ceramicists ended up with mugs.

An illustrator's desk with pencils, paint and a cup of tea

Illustration desk

Editorial and children’s book illustration. Ink, gouache, digital — usually all three in one commission.

Metal type sorted in a printer's case

Letterpress corner

A 1960s Adana and 200kg of metal type. Business cards, zines, art prints.

A 3D printer mid-print in a maker lab

Prototype lab

3D printer, laser cutter, soldering stations. Two hardware startups have tested here before committing to a factory, which is exactly what it is for.

Why people stay

Three residents, on the thing that actually made the difference.

Ceramicist
★★★★★

I worked from my bedroom for two years. Having a real bench, with a kiln ten steps away, changed everything about what I was willing to attempt.

The Friday crits are the reason I stay. Honest feedback from people in completely different disciplines, which is the only kind worth having.

I prototyped three versions of my product here before going anywhere near a factory. The lab paid for the membership in the first week.
